Joint Entrance Exam or JEE is a crucial exam which has its own way of handling admission process. Candidates think that once they score well, all their work is done. But such is not the case. Yes, the exam is important, but to take the whole admission process lightly is wrong. One misplaced information or skipping a step in the process might cost the candidates to lose admission seat in their dream engineering institute.
Cracking JEE Advanced Exam is every aspiring engineer's aim. However, their goal is not achieved even when they qualify the exam. It is achieved when they are done with the counselling process and have secured a seat in the top engineering institute. So, it becomes clear that the JEE Advanced counselling process is very crucial for the students and for this reason itself, this article will discuss the process in detail.
The JEE Advanced Counselling process which is followed by JoSAA has certain steps
Step-1 Registration for the Counselling
Step- 2 Filling in the Choices of institutes and locking them
Step-3 Allotment of seat
Step-4 Fee Payment
Step-5 Reporting to the allotted Institutes and Provisional Admission
Well now that all the candidates are familiar with the stages, let’s discuss them in detail so that they know exactly what to do at every step.
The candidates who are eligible for the counselling need to register online for the same. Following the brochure issued by JoSAA, while registering, the candidates provide following details
- JEE Advanced Roll no.
- JEE Advanced Registration no.
- Date of Birth
- Password and User ID
Once the candidates have registered themselves, they then need to fill in the choice of institutes, courses and branches according to their preference. The candidates should keep in mind that the list they make is in descending order, with their most preferred institute being number one on the list and the least preferred is in the last.
3. Allotment of seat
Also, the candidates have an option to rearrange their preferences. However, they should lock the list before the issued deadline.
According to JoSAA, the seat allotment is done strictly on the basis of the candidates All India Rank, the Category Rank and their preference in the registration form.

5. Reporting to the allotted Institutes and Provisional Admission:
For the reserved category seats, the candidates with the highest rank in their respective categories will be selected. Thus, Opening and Closing Rank, and cut-offs for different categories may possibly vary for each course.
After the allocation of the seat, the candidates have to make fees payment as only then would the allotted seat be theirs. The payment can be made either by e-challan or by SBI Net Banking.
Talking about the fees amount the seat acceptance fees for candidates belonging to the issued list of the reserved category is Rs. 20,000 and for the general category, the seat acceptance fee is Rs. 45,000.
Once the candidates have paid the fees, they then need to report to their respective allotted institutes with their documents for the verification. The document that they need are

- 3 passport size photographs (same as uploaded at the time of the registration).
- Photo identity card.
- Proof of seat acceptance fee payment.
- Provisional seat admission letter.
- JEE Advance admit card.
- JEE Advanced scorecard.
- Class X and XII mark sheet.
- Category certificate (if applicable).
Apart from the photocopies, the candidates are required to carry the original documents as well for the verification. The originals will be returned and copies will be retained.
Once this is all done, the candidates will be provided with the provisional admission letter.
